About
Musical settings of the last days of Christ date back to the dawn of Christianity. The genre evolved very little until the 14th century, then established its credentials two centuries later – when the Lutheran Reformation stipulated that texts must be sung in German so that everyone could understand them, and under the influence of Italian opera – by developing a richer polyphonic form. The St John Passion is the first large-scale piece written for the town of Leipzig where Bach had recently settled. This grandiose work moves us with the beauty of the arias performed by its soloists and its choral passages.
