About
Based on accounts of the creation of the universe in the Bible (the Book of Genesis and the Book of Psalms) and on Paradise Lost by the poet John Milton, this hugely accomplished work is considered to be the musician’s masterpiece. At over sixty-five years of age, the founding father of the sonata, the architect of Viennese classicism, and author of a monumental catalogue of symphonies and string quartets, was keen to return to the oratorio genre which Handel had elevated to great heights. Haydn, who made several trips to London, had heard some of Handel’s works there. He wanted to make his mark in his own right in this genre with this ode to the creator.
