About
High Romanticism is guaranteed with Carnival Scenes from Vienna, which the composer penned as a sonata in four movements before adding an emotionally volatile Intermezzo. Nikolai Lugansky will then bring all his nobility to bear on Opus 20, also by Schumann, a “Humoreske” where dreams meet hallucinations. Other nightmarish visions will pepper the second half devoted to Chopin’s Préludes. According to George Sand, “several of them call to mind visions of deceased monks and sound like funeral dirges; others are melancholic and suave”. This is an ideal programme for this Russian pianist who is one of the greatest performers of our century. The recording which he made of them in the 2000s is the gold standard.
