About

According to Jonathan Biss, “Beethoven is so demanding that you feel a sense of responsibility, a certain weight of expectation when you perform his music”. He has been obsessed with Beethoven since early childhood having discovered a recording by Rudolf Serkin at the tender age of seven. This may explain why many people notice an affinity between his approach to the text and that of the earlier performer. Before recording his complete works of Beethoven, the American pianist embarked on a project to record the thirty-two sonatas by the composer of the Missa solemnis (Beethoven’s Shadow, 2011). This is a daunting corpus and he is back with the last three great sonatas for an evening of towering musicality and spiritual depth
