About
Mahler kept the unfinished score of The Song of the Earth for almost two years. The work probably struck such a personal chord that he was unable to have it performed. Mahler died in 1911 and Bruno Walter conducted it a few months later in Munich at a concert dedicated to Mahler. Very few posthumous works have had such a triumphant reception. The voices of the two soloists are treated like actual instruments, creating a perfect balance between the purity of the singing and the power of the orchestra.
