Symphony No. 3
About
Spending an evening in the company of Rachmaninoff is slightly intoxicating. This is not just because his last symphony written in exile as a mature composer and appended with the words “Finished! Praise be to God!”, is melancholic, but also because its imaginary fantasizes about and reinvents the Slav land of his birth. The composer observed: “Joyful peals, melancholy death knells, every Russian has a deep inner love of bells”. He hoped that this vocal symphony, which he considered to one of his greatest successes, would “ring the bells of human emotions”.
