About
The great Mozart specialist Martin Helmchen is reunited with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris after performing the composer’s Concerto No. 20 with them last season. This time, the pianist is turning his attention to a less well-known Mozart, with Concerto for piano No. 2 by Wolfgang Mozart’s son Franz Xaver. This is a charming virtuoso work in which the young composer began to assert his own style. Conductor Thomas Hengelbrock bookends this concerto with a symphony by Boccherini and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8. This symphony was composed a few years before the composer moved to America and celebrates the Old World, and more specifically the Czech countryside that inspired it. The bohemian melodies charmingly echo the sounds of nature, earning it the nickname “Pastoral”. The third movement, with the strains of a Hungarian dance, is reminiscent of Brahms.
