About
We first saw and admired him conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonic. Now we are discovering him at the helm of the historic Munich Philharmonic, one of the oldest and most experienced German orchestras, where at just 35 years of age he is taking over the baton from Sergiu Celibidache, James Levine, Christian Thielemann, Lorin Maazel, and Valery Gergiev. This young maestro with a string of successes behind him is not intimidated by the task. As a prelude to Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony and symphonic excerpts from Tristan and Isolde, violinist Lisa Batiashvili will open the concert with Beethoven’s only concerto for this instrument, a virtuoso piece which has long been part of her concert repertoire and which she recently recorded on the Sony label.
