About
The City of Birmingham Orchestra has not visited avenue Montaigne for several seasons and we are delighted to welcome them back with music director Kazuki Yamada, who took over the helm from conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla two years ago. Following in the wake of two recent recitals, pianist Bruce Lui, winner of the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw, is also back in the world of Russia, which we heard in his previous recital. Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No. 1 is a distillation of all the Russian composer’s qualities: inspired lyricism, warm virtuosity, and exuberant orchestration. Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky is also an orchestral lesson in which the musician takes us on a journey of the senses.
