About
We will wrap up this series on 30 June in the slums of an African-American town in South Carolina where love blossoms amidst crime and poverty in Porgy and Bess. Gershwin’s opera was premiered in 1935 and the song “Summertime” quickly found its way into the jazz clubs. Gershwin was keen to synthesize “the drama and romance of Carmen, and the beauty of Die Meistersinger”. He succeeded in this ambition with this fusion of opera, blues, African spirituals, and jazz.
