About
A decade after its collaboration with Stéphane Braunschweig and Riccardo Frizza, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris is presenting Norma again at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, this time with the young Italian conductor Lorenzo Passerini at the helm. This Italian operatic repertoire specialist’s La Bohème by Puccini has already been much admired by Parisian audiences. Eve-Maud Hubeaux will sing Adalgisa, and soprano Karine Deshayes will play Norma, one of the most difficult parts in the soprano repertoire. This passionate woman, who has been abandoned by the man she loves, is briefly tempted to commit infanticide, but eventually chooses to be burnt on a pyre for breaking her druidic vow of chastity. Norma, Bellini’s ninth opera, and a close contemporary of La Sonnambula, is a powerful tragedy combining dramatic genius with an extremely assured grasp of melody.
