About
The success enjoyed by Meyerbeer with Le Prophète followed in the wake of two similarly big hits, Robert le Diable and Les Huguenots. Everything in this work is on a huge scale: an impressive cast, choral ensembles, and staggeringly demanding orchestration. This work marks the pinnacle of French grand opera. Offenbach and Bizet in turn would invent other genres, before Debussy ushered in the modern era at the dawn of 20th century with Pelléas et Mélisande.
