About
Most child prodigies burn out by their late teens, but Mozart and Mendelssohn entered a fascinating period of maturity as adults. Who can fail to be dazzled the expressive intensity of Piano Concerto No. 9 (the “Jeunehomme” concerto)? The piano makes a swift entrance in bar two and the tragic tones of the “Andantino” minuet are inserted into the final movement. Mozart was just twenty one when he introduced these ideas which breathed new life into the concerto form. Mendelssohn was only twenty when he began work on Symphony No. 3 following a trip to Scotland which had a profound impact on him. He refined it for thirteen years, without detracting from its youthful freshness, until he felt that it was ready to unveil to audiences. Rugby by Honegger will be performed in a version for chamber orchestra created by Gérard Pesson, and is a topical sporting nod to the Rugby World Cup in France in October.
