About
This programme needs no further justification than the pleasure of listening to three of the most beautiful works in the orchestral repertoire. Firstly, Le Tombeau resplendissant, which, as is indicated by its title, is a dazzling work and one of the very earliest scores written for orchestra by Messiaen, premiered by the great Pierre Monteux. The Symphonie Pathétique, with its melancholic waltz and frenetic march which finishes in the manner of a silent requiem, is no longer performed. In between these two works, Diana Damrau will reacquaint herself with Richard Strauss, a rich eulogist inspired by the female voice, and ask the famous question which goes to the very heart of Capriccio: “Prima la musica ? e poi le parole ?”
