About

The nineteenth century attempted to consign Così to oblivion, taking it to task for its immorality. The work is one of the jewels in the crown of the Libertine movement which, while admittedly quite literary, spread throughout Enlightenment Europe and fed into other artistic spheres. Frivolous, lightweight, misogynous – the opera was accused of almost every possible flaw – and yet Mozart is at his most sentimental and sensual. The libretto explores different permutations with relish and offers Mozart a wide range of situations and vocal ensembles. Is this an exploration of the carefree nature of youth whose fidelity is challenged or a textbook on how to love? Spectators must decide for themselves
